The Inn Crowd: From Miami to Mexico, Two New Hotels to Luxuriate In
Mondrian Miami. Oh, for those magical days of schmoozing and flirting one's way up to the Mondrian's instantly fabled Sky Bar. But now that Sunset Boulevard is the new Disneyworld, and New York's Meatpacking District is, well, the new Sunset Boulevard (Meatywood, if you will), the smart set are spending significantly more of their decadent hours in Florida's capital of the swinging life. And since Miami may be the only place in the world where the answer to the question, "Does this city really need another trendy hotel?" might pretty much always be "yes," the Morgans Hotel Group is exporting some West Hollywood cool to the American South in the form of the new Mondrian Miami. A $150 million renovation of a Biscayne Bay residential tower (just in time for Art Basel Miami), this will be the sort of mega-chic lodging that - like its West Coast cousin - carefully balances the selling of glorious luxury (high-design, higher-end spa, private boat slips) and, with its sure to be over-amped nightlife, the persistent hope that when you're here, you're just that much more likely to, ahem, "get some" than at any other hipster hotel in town. Posh private residences will also be included in the mix. For scenesters, a whole new plateau.
