MIAMI TWICE

Two revitalised hotels make South Beach acceptable again. For a few years, we've been giving Florida in general a wide berth, mainly because it appears full of the kind of leathery scenester-types who previously did such a fine job of ruining Ibiza. However, a few new hotel developments suggest that the natural home of alligators, right-wing Cubans and arse-fixated music is moving in the right direction once again.

The art deco Delano Hotel has just been overhauled, its outdoor lobby, personal orchard and eye-searing, all-white rooms introducing a strong dose of pared-down European sophistication to the area. But readers preferring a lengthier stay will want to explore the Mondrian apartments in Biscayne Bay. Designed by Marcel Wanders (a founder member of the Dutch Droog collective), the loft-like units can either be rented as hotel rooms, or purchased, with studios starting at $400,000. A brilliant investment - assuming another massive, hurricane-induced flood doesn't hit that part of the US again, obviously.
